Quick answer: before the first snowfall, install winter tires, test your battery, top up winter-rated fluids, check wipers and lights, keep at least half a tank of fuel, pack an emergency kit, and know who to call. Most winter tow calls we get trace back to one of these seven things.
1. Put on winter tires early
Winter tires stay flexible below about 7°C and grip snow and ice far better than all-seasons. Look for the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol, check tread depth, and recheck pressure regularly, since it drops as temperatures fall. Many Ontario insurers offer a discount for winter tires.
2. Test your battery
Cold weather reduces battery capacity just when your engine needs more power to start. If your battery is more than three years old or the engine cranks slowly, have it load-tested. A five-minute test can save you a dead-battery morning.
3. Switch to winter-rated fluids
- Washer fluid rated to at least –40°C.
- Antifreeze/coolant at the correct mix for your vehicle.
- An oil change if you’re due, using the grade in your owner’s manual.
4. Check wipers, lights and defrost
Replace streaky wiper blades, clean every light lens, and make sure the defroster and rear defogger work. Clear all snow off the roof, hood and lights before driving. Visibility is safety.
5. Keep at least half a tank of fuel
A fuller tank reduces condensation in the fuel system and gives you heat and a safety margin if you’re stuck in a closure on Highway 400 or 410.
6. Pack a winter emergency kit
- Snow brush, ice scraper and a small shovel
- Sand, kitty litter or traction mats
- Booster cables or a portable jump starter
- Blanket, warm gloves, hat and extra socks
- Flashlight with spare batteries and a phone charger
- Water, non-perishable snacks and a basic first-aid kit
- Reflective triangles or flares
7. Know what to do if you slide off the road
If you end up in a ditch or snowbank, don’t spin the tires, since that digs you in deeper. Turn on your hazards, make sure your exhaust pipe isn’t blocked by snow if you’re running the engine for heat, and call for a winch-out or recovery. Stay with your vehicle unless it’s unsafe.
